Concord Hill School was founded in 1965.

1965

In the crisp fall of 1965, Concord Hill School opened its doors for the first time, welcoming 20 eager students into its warm and inviting environment. Founded by Olivia Chappell, Nancy Israel, deVismes Lee, and Katherine Shorb, this non-denominational, not-for-profit pre-elementary school initially found its home in St. Albans Parish Church.

1967

By 1967, Eleanor Chatfield-Taylor took the helm as the first Director, beginning a remarkable 23-year journey that saw Concord Hill blossom. Under her guidance, the school expanded to include Grades 1–3 and a Preprimary class in 1972. The move to our current location at 6050 Wisconsin Avenue in 1987 marked a new chapter, with Mrs. Taylor overseeing a significant renovation and welcoming 90 students for the 1988–89 school year.

1991

In 1991, French McConnaughey succeeded Mrs. Taylor as the second Director, bringing a renewed vision and focus to the school. Her 11-year tenure was marked by the development of Concord Hill's first strategic long-term plan and the addition of a new library, art room, music room, and playground. Her warm, nurturing leadership helped foster a strong, close-knit community.

2002

2002 ushered in a new era with Denise Gershowitz as the third Head of School. Her 14 years at Concord Hill were characterized by her passion for children and high standards, significantly strengthening the school’s reputation. Under her leadership, the curriculum expanded to include technology and Spanish, and the Financial Aid program grew, increasing diversity within our community. Mrs. Gershowitz also played a crucial role in growing the school's endowment from nearly $500,000 to over $2 million.

2016

In July 2016, James Carroll took on the fourth Head of School role, bringing with him a wealth of experience in teaching and administration. His commitment to early childhood education and focus on what is best for the children continued to drive Concord Hill forward.

2018

Susan Arzt, previously the Assistant Head of School and Director of Admission & Financial Aid, stepped in as Acting Head of School in February 2018 while the search for the next Head of School began.

2019

In July 2019, Nate Dennison was appointed the fifth Head of School. His extensive experience and dedication to early childhood education resonated with our values and vision. Known for always prioritizing children's needs, Nate's leadership further enriched Concord Hill’s community.

2024

In July 2024, we welcomed Michelle Farkas as the sixth Head of Concord Hill School. Previously serving as the Director of Teaching and Learning, Michelle has a deep understanding of Concord Hill’s culture, values, and educational philosophy. Her leadership skills, combined with her love of early childhood education and dedication to fostering joy in learning, make her the perfect fit to guide us into the future. As both an experienced educator and a Concord Hill parent, Michelle brings a unique perspective and commitment to the school community.

As we look forward to this exciting new chapter, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who have shaped Concord Hill into the cherished institution it is today. We are eager to continue growing and thriving together- welcome to the next chapter of our journey.
